Adopted Scarecrows Move To Grant Beach Website

Hello, the Scarecrow is one of the most familiar figures of the rural landscape so we adopted three scarecrow brothers for our neighborhood website. The raggedy scarecrow has been recorded in rural history for centuries.  We would like to introduce you to three new residents of the Grant Beach neighborhood.  Their names are: Michael Scarecrow, Miles Scarecrow,  and Mathew Scarecrow. Michael is the oldest and Mathew is the youngest.  Miles is the one in the middle.  These three scarecrows are brothers. They moved to Springfield Missouri from Billy Bear's Playground. That where we adopted them from.  We would like to treat them just like we treat newcomers to Grant Beach neighborhood.  We want to make them feel welcome.  Well there is a very special way to make these three scarecrow brothers feel welcome at their new home on the Grant Beach neighborhood website. Wanna know what it is?

LESSON: When someone new moves into your neighborhood, FIND a way to make them feel welcome! DON'T forget. Be sure to invite them to a neighborhood meeting or event!

Well to make these Scarecrow newcomers welcome simply:

Click on the Scarecrows with your mouse and hold on tight and drag them around the computer screen and drop them where you want them.

Viola... they will feel very welcomed to their new website neighborhood.

This is Miles Scarecrow. He is a very smart little scarecrow. He wants to tell you something about scarecrows: "Farmers work very hard planting and harvesting their crops. The scarecrow is an important "farm hand" whose job is to stand in the garden and frighten away birds which might eat the fruit, vegetables, and grain before they're harvested. People all over the world rely on the figures to keep their crops safe."

Miles Scarecrow also wants to tell you: "Scarecrows have been used for 3000 years all over the world, and have been called by other names like the jack-of-straw, scarebird, tattybogle, shoy-hoy."

This is Michael Scarecrow. He likes to play cool video games. He would also like to tell you something about scarecrows: "Scarecrows have a long history, dating back to the ancient Romans and Greeks who carved wooden statues of their harvest gods to stand guard in the fields. Germans created wooden witches for the same purpose, and they believed that the figures had special powers to draw the "evil spirit of winter" into their bodies so that spring would come. People in Japan protected their rice paddies with scarecrows made of oily rags and fish bones attached to tall sticks."

Lucas Scarecrow would also like to tell you: "Hungry birds have always been a problem for farmers.  Sometimes the birds ate so much corn or wheat that a farmer and his family would not have enough food to last through the winter." SO "Farmers get hoppin' mad when crows and other birds snatch their crops. That's why they started making scarecrows. They stuffed old clothes with straw. Then they put these scarecrow "people" on poles in their fields. Did the scarecrows do a good job of frightening the birds away? Maybe for a few hours. Pretty soon the birds were using the scarecrows as places to rest between meals!"

This is Mathew Scarecrow, he is the youngest and funniest scarecrow brother of our adopted three. Mathew Scarecrow likes to make people laugh and he is very good at it too.  He is so sweet and funny. Mathew has something to tell you about scarecrows too: "As you can see, scarecrows are created from whatever the farmer has on hand. In America the figure is usually made of some old clothes and a hat, and the stuffing is straw or hay."

Mathew Scarecrow also wants to tell you: "Neither rain nor snow nor dead of night can make the scarecrow leave their post as guardians of the crops.   They also weather the through the wind, sleet and blazing sun.  They protect young corn in the spring; in the summer, beans and cabbages, in the fall  and winter, the early plantings of wheat."

You can visit Billy Bear's Playground Thanksgiving Pages and adopt a scarecrow of your own. Thank you Miss Loraine for giving us permission to adopt these three scarecrow kids. We love them. Billy Bear's Playground has LOADS of really fun stuff.

The Grant Beach Neighborhood Betterment Association is a group of citizens working together to maintain and improve the quality of living in our area. We meet monthly on a regular basis to address neighborhood concerns, and encourage residents to start smaller neighborhood watch groups in their block. We believe that people should actively participate as citizens in a democracy and as neighbors in in a community. We are a group of citizens interested in working together to maintain and improve the living quality of our neighborhood, motivate the city to address our concerns, be a spawning ground for neighborhood watch programs and build a sense of community among us. Working together, there is little that cannot be done, working apart there is little that can be done.

Mission Statement: "Improving the quality of life in our neighborhood"

This website is simply a tool we use to help keep our neighbors connected to each other, to their neighborhood and to their City of Springfield, Missouri. Please consider attending the monthly meeting. Potluck Dinner for the whole family and Free child care for the meeting
