Villages In ProgressWhat is Villages in Progress?VIP was begun in 2002 by 3 women with a combined total experience of 39 years working with and on behalf of low income families. Mission StatementOur mission is to build strong communities one village at a time. We define village as a neighborhood, a particular group of people, several families or sometimes as one family who need information about resources. What does VIP do?We have provided financial literacy classes in neighborhood settings. We have an ongoing grocery distribution program, Bunches of Lunches, which receives major financial support from trade union locals. Churches and area schools have also supported our efforts with food drives. We primarily serve families who have children who qualify for free and/or reduced school lunches. Our Meld program has just completed it's pilot year with two groups of teen Mothers meeting weekly for 20 weeks. These unique parent support programs are facilitated by young women who were teen mothers and are now living very stable adult lives. The Moms in the groups select the topics they want to discuss from the Meld curriculum and we facilitate the discussions by bringing in representatives from local agencies to help provide correct information. We've had child support enforcement, the health department, Educare and others share information with our groups this year. We are always looking for former teen Moms to train as peer facilitators and Parents as Teachers has referred both prospective facilitators and Mom participants to us. Meld and PAT merged in 2005 and a pilot project is in the works which would include VIP as the Meld affiliate working with the local PAT educators. All of our programming is grant funded - both through local foundations and national sources of support. Our newest project is LIFE House (Living Independent Financially stable Educated lives) which is opportunity housing for young Mothers and their children while the Mothers complete either higher education (college degree) or career training. We are currently seeking funding and donations in connection with LIFE House which we plan to open in 2007. For more information or to donate contact:

The Grant Beach Neighborhood Betterment Association is a group of citizens working together to maintain and improve the quality of living in our area. We meet monthly on a regular basis to address neighborhood concerns, and encourage residents to start smaller neighborhood watch groups in their block. We believe that people should actively participate as citizens in a democracy and as neighbors in in a community. We are a group of citizens interested in working together to maintain and improve the living quality of our neighborhood, motivate the city to address our concerns, be a spawning ground for neighborhood watch programs and build a sense of community among us. Working together, there is little that cannot be done, working apart there is little that can be done. Mission Statement: "Improving the quality of life in our neighborhood" This website is simply a tool we use to help keep our neighbors connected to each other, to their neighborhood and to their City of Springfield, Missouri. Please consider attending the monthly meeting. Potluck Dinner for the whole family and Free child care for the meeting
